Australia has a long history with the mullet. Now your cat can have one too. The Aussie Mullet Cut is our newest cat haircut, created here at XMMO in Braybrook, and it’s the only place in Melbourne you’ll find it. It costs $130, or $190 with a wash.

01 — The Cut
What is the Aussie Mullet Cut for cats?
It’s a lion cut with a party down the back. The body is clipped short and smooth, and a strip of longer hair is left running from the top of the head, down the neck and between the shoulders. That strip is the mullet.
- Short body. The back, sides and belly are clipped close, so the coat is cool and easy to look after.
- The mullet. A band of full-length hair runs from the crown down the back of the neck and tapers off past the shoulders.
- Fluffy cheeks. The face and cheeks are left full and tidied by hand.
- Boots. The lower legs and paws keep their fur.
02 — The Price
How much does an Aussie Mullet Cut cost?
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Aussie Mullet Cut – no wash | $130 |
| Aussie Mullet Cut + wash | $190 |
The wash option adds a full bath and blow-dry, which lifts out loose undercoat and leaves the mullet soft and full. To see how our other cuts are priced, read our cat grooming price guide.
03 — Mullet vs Lion Cut
How is it different from a lion cut or teddy bear cut?
All three are short cuts for long-haired and medium-haired cats. The difference is where the length is left.
| Cut | Body | Where the length stays |
|---|---|---|
| Aussie Mullet Cut | Clipped short | A strip from the head down the back, plus cheeks and boots |
| Lion Cut | Clipped short | A full mane around the neck, the tail tip and boots |
| Teddy Bear Cut | Even trim all over | A soft, rounded length everywhere |
04 — Is It Right for Your Cat?
Which cats suit an Aussie Mullet Cut?
The mullet needs enough coat to stand out, so it works best on long-haired and medium-haired cats. It’s a good choice if:
- your cat runs hot in a Melbourne summer and you want a short, cool body
- the coat on the body mats or sheds heavily, and a short clip would make life easier
- you’d like something with more personality than a standard lion cut
One condition applies. The hair along the mullet line has to be free of matting, because that part of the coat stays long. If the coat there is badly matted, we’ll tell you, and we’ll suggest a different cut that is kinder to your cat’s skin.
05 — How We Do It
A fun haircut, groomed the Fear Free way
The cut is playful. The way we groom is not. Every Aussie Mullet Cut is done under the same Fear Free practice as the rest of our grooming. We read your cat’s body language, we slow down or take breaks when they need it, and we never scruff or force-restrain a cat to finish a haircut. You can read more in how Fear Free grooming works at XMMO.
Your cat decides how far we go
If your cat has had enough before the cut is finished, we stop. A haircut can be tidied up at the next visit. A bad experience on the grooming table is much harder to undo.
06 — FAQs
Aussie Mullet Cut: frequently asked questions
How much is an Aussie Mullet Cut for a cat?
$130 without a wash, or $190 with a wash, at XMMO Cat Hotel & Spa in Braybrook.
Does a mullet cut hurt my cat?
No. It’s a clipper cut, like a lion cut. The only difference is the strip of hair we leave long.
How long does the mullet last?
The body coat grows back gradually over the following months. To keep the shape, most long-haired cats do well with a groom every 6–8 weeks.
Can short-haired cats get an Aussie Mullet Cut?
There usually isn’t enough length for the mullet to show on a short coat. Bring your cat in or send us a photo, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it will work.
Where can I get an Aussie Mullet Cut for my cat?
Only at XMMO Cat Hotel & Spa in Braybrook, in Melbourne’s west. We created the cut here.
