Ragdolls are known for their calm temperament and beautiful, flowing coats. While their fur is softer and less extreme than some long-haired breeds, Ragdolls still require routine professional grooming to stay mat-free and comfortable.

Understanding the Ragdoll Coat

Ragdolls have a semi-long, silky coat with minimal undercoat compared to Persians. This gives them a plush feel and reduces heavy shedding — but it does not make them maintenance-free.

Common problem areas include:

  • Under the arms

  • Chest and neck

  • Belly

  • Behind the ears

  • Base of the tail

Because the fur is fine and soft, knots often form close to the skin and go unnoticed until they tighten.

Recommended Grooming Schedule

Every 8 weeks for a healthy, mat-free coat

An 8-week grooming routine allows loose hair to be removed before tangles form and keeps the skin clean and well-ventilated. Extending beyond this interval significantly increases the risk of matting.

Cost Expectations

  • Routine maintenance grooming: full grooming is about $90-$120 per session

  • De-matting or corrective grooming: higher cost due to time, skill, and stress management required, de-matting is ranging from $20 to $150

Regular maintenance is always more cost-effective than fixing advanced matting.

Why Consistency Matters

Even light matting can cause:

  • Skin irritation

  • Trapped moisture

  • Pain when moving or being handled

Once mats tighten, brushing is no longer comfortable or safe.

Shaving Is Not the Goal

Shaving is sometimes necessary for severe matting, but it is not ideal:

  • Many cats dislike clippers

  • Very short clips can be stressful

  • Coat regrowth can be uneven

Routine grooming prevents this entirely.
