01 — A Gut Built for One Job
A cat's digestive tract is short because it never needed to be long.
A cat's gastrointestinal tract is notably shorter than an omnivore's, with a reduced cecum and colon — because in the wild, a cat's diet was almost entirely animal protein and fat, digested quickly and directly. There was no evolutionary pressure to build a longer gut for fermenting plant matter or starch, the way an omnivore's digestive system does.
That's not a flaw. It's a highly efficient system — for the diet it evolved to run on. The trouble starts when that short, fast-transit gut is asked to process something it was never built for: large amounts of processed carbohydrate, delivered daily, for years.
02 — The Enzyme Cats Don't Have
Carbohydrate digestion starts in the mouth. A cat's mouth skips that step entirely.
In most mammals, digesting starch begins with salivary amylase — an enzyme that starts breaking carbohydrate down the moment it's chewed. Cats don't produce salivary amylase at all. Their pancreatic amylase — the backup system — runs at only a fraction of the level seen in dogs. Carbohydrate digestion in a cat is a much narrower pathway than it is in an omnivore, because it never needed to be wide.
Tellingly, neither the National Research Council nor AAFCO sets a minimum — or maximum — carbohydrate requirement for cats. There isn't one, because cats don't need one.
Cats don't need dietary carbohydrate to meet their glucose needs. Through gluconeogenesis, they generate glucose from protein and fat instead — including the glycerol backbone released when dietary fat is broken down, and glucogenic amino acids like methionine and cysteine, which cats get from animal protein. A carnivore's body already has a working system for making the glucose it needs. It was never waiting on carbs to show up.
03 — Why "Just Switch Brands" Doesn't Fix It
Different bag, same format problem.
This is where a lot of well-meaning owners get stuck: their cat vomits, so they switch to a different dry food, and the improvement — if there is one — doesn't last. That's because the underlying issue usually isn't the specific brand. It's the format. Dry kibble, almost by definition, needs a starch component to hold its shape during processing, and it's built around a moisture level nowhere near what a cat's body expects from food.
A short, fast-transit gut with minimal carbohydrate-digesting capacity, fed a starch-dependent food day after day, is a mismatch that a brand swap doesn't resolve. For cats with a sensitive stomach in particular, the vomiting, soft stool, or hairball frequency people learn to live with is often the gut quietly flagging that mismatch — not a random quirk of that individual cat.
04 — What Actually Changes on Fresh, Species-Appropriate Food
Less waste, less strain, more of what the body can actually use.
Digestibility is the real measure that matters here — how much of what a cat eats is actually absorbed, versus how much passes through undigested as bulk. A useful, visible proxy for this is stool: large, frequent, strong-smelling stools generally mean more of the food is passing through unused rather than being absorbed.

- Frequent vomiting or hairballs
Commonly reported on fresh/raw
- Smaller, well-formed, less odorous stools
- Soft, glossy coat
- More playful, engaged energy
- Fewer digestive symptoms over time
Owners who transition also often see changes in body composition — overweight cats trimming down, underweight cats gaining healthy weight — and better hydration from moisture-rich food, which eases the workload on the kidneys and urinary tract rather than adding to it.
Some owners report meaningful improvement in cats with urinary issues, IBD, or diabetes after a properly managed transition — occasionally significant enough that vets adjust or reduce medication. That's a conversation to have with your vet, not instead of one; individual cats and underlying conditions vary too much for a blanket promise.
TRANSITION SAFELY
The first 1–2 weeks can look messy before they look better. Mild vomiting or loose stool during a transition is common as the gut adapts to a genuinely different diet — that's expected, not a sign it's not working. Go slow, watch your cat rather than the calendar, and loop your vet in, especially for any cat with an existing health condition.
Sourcing and handling matter. A "raw diet" is only as good as how it's balanced and handled — properly formulated to meet a cat's full nutrient needs, and prepared with the same food safety care you'd use for raw meat in your own kitchen.
Your cat was never the sensitive one. Their gut has been telling you the truth about what it needs — most of us just weren't taught to listen.
